Overview

This notice describes the policy of Robot Enlightenment (hereafter, RE or “we”) regarding the nature, purpose, use, and sharing of any information that we collect. It applies to all parts of our website, including the RE platform. Some portions of the policy text are adapted from NASA’s Web Privacy Policy. RE is not affiliated with or endorsed by NASA.

Submitting information is strictly voluntary. By doing so, you are giving RE your permission to use the information for the intended purpose, as described below. If you do not want to give RE permission to use your information, simply do not provide it. However, not providing certain information may result in RE’s inability to provide you with the information or services you desire.

This privacy policy is subject to change. After any modification, we will update the “last updated” date at the top of the notice.

Automatically Collected Information

This website uses Google Analytics. Please refer to the following policies on Google’s website for more information:

We use Google Analytics to collect and temporarily store certain technical information about your visit for use in site management and security purposes. This information includes:

  1. The Internet domain from which you access our Web site
  2. The IP address (a unique number for each computer connected to the Internet) from which you access our Web site
  3. The type of browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer) used to access our site
  4. The operating system (e.g., Windows, Mac) used to access our site
  5. The date and time you access our site
  6. The URLs of the pages you visit
  7. If you visited RE’s site from another website, the URL of the forwarding site
  8. Anonymous summary demographic information about our visitors such as gender, age range, and areas of interest for adults over the age of 18

Demographic information (8) is obtained using Google Demographic and Interests reports. When you visit a website that has partnered with the Google Display Network, Google stores a number in your browser using a persistent cookie to remember your visits. This number uniquely identifies a web browser, not a specific person. Browsers may be associated with a demographic category, such as gender or age range, based on the sites that were visited.

This information is generally used to help us make our site more useful for you. With this data we learn about the number of visitors to our site and the types of technology our visitors use.

Although the primary purpose of automatically collecting this kind of information is not to track individuals who visit this site, we will share user information with the United States federal government if legally required to do so. Except for authorized law enforcement investigations, no attempts are made to identify individual users or their usage habits. Raw data logs are retained temporarily as required for security and site management purposes only.

Information Collected for Tracking and Customization (Cookies)

A cookie is a small file that a Web site transfers to your computer to allow it to remember specific information about your session while you are connected. Your computer will only share the information in the cookie with the Web site that provided it, and no other Web site can request it. There are two types of cookies, session and persistent. Session cookies last only as long as your Web browser is open. Once you close your browser, the cookie disappears. Persistent cookies store information on your computer for longer periods of time.

The RE website may use session or persistent cookies for technical purposes, for example, to

  1. enable better navigation through the site
  2. allow you to customize your preferences for interacting with the site
  3. remember your customized preferences or login credentials between visits

If you do not wish to have session or persistent cookies stored on your machine, you can turn them off in your browser. However, this may affect the functioning of our website.

Newsletter

Website visitors may subscribe to our newsletter by providing an email address. Subscribers will only receive RE-related correspondence and may unsubscribe by clicking the “unsubscribe” link in any email that we send. We administer the newsletter and send emails using Amazon Web Services (AWS). We do not share email addresses with any other third parties, unless required by the United States federal government. If we become aware that email addresses have been compromised (e.g., due to an AWS-specific issue), we will attempt to notify all members of the mailing list.

Analytics Platform

Several types of data may be provided by users of the RE platform, including

  1. Login credentials (email address and password)
  2. Platform-specific data such as geospatial asset locations

For authentication purposes, we store user email addresses. For security reasons, we do not retain raw user passwords, but instead store hashed versions.

All data are stored on AWS servers. As with newsletter email addresses, we will attempt to notify users in the event of a security breach. We will not share your platform-specific data with any third parties except the United States federal government, if legally required.
